Project: Project Vintage

Brand: Stadium Sound

Client: JB HiFi

The Brief

The project was to develop a new professional and consumer level range of bluetooth guitar amps, studio speakers and subs. Inspiration was taken from a range of different sources, including guitar amp designs, vintage trends, materials. Colour-ways, textures, included functionality, physical controls etc.

In the end, we were able to develop a recognisable JB Hi-fi brand that has been well received by end users with nothing but 5 star reviews since its release.

This range has been developed over the course of 2016 . The first of the series was rolled out Christmas 2016 throughout all JB Hi-Fi stores with the next to be rolled out this coming christmas.

The Fun Stuff - My Design and Development

Concept Generation

The client gave no initial design direction for the amp so a variety concepts were explored to narrow down to his ideal product direction.

Concept Refinement

We were able to focus on the entry level variant in the amp range to refine the product styling including large rounded corners, a simple and clean control panel with Stadium specific control knobs and vintage styling through materials.

CAD Development

Assembly, ergonomics and aesthetics were refined in Solidworks and Keyshot. At this stage the design was signed off for prototyping.

Prototyping

With a direction locked in a prototype was created by myself to confirm design, scale, materials, engineering and product assembly. A combination of 3D printed plastic corners and  12mm MDF were used to build the enclosure.

Detail Design

Several construction methods were explored while considering acoustic characteristics, material selections, ease of assembly and overall costs.

Production Prototype

After several weeks the first production prototype was received for testing and tuning. The plastics for the control panel and knobs were cnc Machined and the metal grill was replaced with a machined sheet of 12mm MDF.
